Nothing worth a damn is ever done as a matter of principle.
If it is worth doing, it is done because it is worth doing.
If it is not, it's done as a matter of principle.
- James T. Evans
Adultery Definition Issues
Premise: The "Bible definition" of adultery is superficial and
artificially constrained by the fiat legalism of whoever compiled, borrowed
or wrote that "10 Commandment" portion of the Old Testament. There is a more
general and meaningful principle that surely should apply.
Dictionary definitions of Adulterate, vt :
- To render (something) poorer in quality by adding another substance, typically an
- To make inferior, impure, not genuine.
- To corrupt, debase, or make impure by the addition of a foreign or
inferior substance or element.
Synonyms: degrade, debase, spoil, taint, defile, contaminate, pollute,
befoul, sully, doctor, tamper with, mix, lace, dilute, water down, thin out, weaken,
Adultery: The degrading or lessening of value of something
pure and special by contamination through downgrading or violating its
structure or intent..
So much for the technical or lexical aspects. because these don't deal
with WHY adultery is such a false construct in the religious community.
more legitimate or meaningful aspects of adultery relate to fundamental
principles that no reasonable person can gainsay. When something is healthy
and life enhancing, why would you want to damage, ruin or destroy it?
However, it is always the purpose of an action that determines it to be
legitimate or not. Given that the whole purpose of life is to increase
morale, when an action can be defended as being life enhancing and not
dangerous, or unethical, it qualifies as being legitimate or loving. Remember, the purpose
of life is not to satisfy some larger than God law, but to increase morale,
fulfillment, the enhancement of life.
There is only one step from the sublime to the ridiculous. - Napoleon
A sexual relationship can be one of the most satisfying and rewarding
aspects of life, and in an imperfect world with imperfect people, I don't
know of a perfect way to approach this arena. It is shallow to think that
formal marriage by a priest, clergyman, or officer of the court legitimizes
a love relationship. Nowadays, these formalities do little else than verify
minimal requirements, provide a public record, and serve as a de facto
license to have children, and outside of these basic aspects, have nothing
to do with morality or ethics. If the relationship is not or no longer
one of respect, fulfillment, love and romance, there may be little or no
actual value to degrade or
ruin. The form may still be there, but how can God be impressed by the form
rather than by the intended reality.
When there is a formal marriage that
turns cold, loveless or destructive, to continue in that sham could be
considered as a form of adultery worse than acknowledging the reality and
making changes. Any valid marriage is undone or unworthy once either one of the parties desires it to end, and then
there would be
nothing much left of which to reduce the value or adulterate. This is the way that much of our modern
Western society operates--often not well--today, because it is based on common sense
realities and no
longer on Biblical legalism.
Freedom and liberty are never attained
while operating under laws or rules. Freedom and liberty are realized when operating within principles
and values with which one agrees and supports.
